The ParishThe parish of Llandrindod lies in southwestern Radnorshire close to its border with neighbouring Breconshire. Llandrindod is located about 6 miles north of the Breconshire spa town of Builth Wells. Llandrindod was formerly a relatively small place located on the A483 road which connects Builth Wells with Newtown, the population grew in Victorian times due to the popularity of its own springs and the coming of the Mid-Wales railway which passes through the valley. A new spa town, Llandrindod Wells grew up to the north of the former village to enable the health benefits of the spa to be exploited. Formerly this was a rather remote upland area dominated by pastoral farming, cattle in the valleys and sheep on higher ground. Llandrindod is located on the eastern side of the valley of the River Ithon which flows south to join the River Wye and head for the Bristol Channel. Llandrindod is located at around 200 metres above sea level and land rises to both east and west to local heights of almost 450 metres on Rhiw Gwraidd (to northwest) and Gelli Hill (to southeast). Llandrindod parish, as befits an upland parish was quite large covering 2,800 acres and prior to the growth of the spa it would have supported just under 300 parishioners. Like most of Wales Llandrindod is not mentioned in Domesday Book. |
