Llanyre St Llyr

 

The Parish

The parish of Llanyre lies in western Radnorshire, indeed it forms part of the border with neighbouring Breconshire. Llanyre is a substantial linear village lying about 5 miles north of the spa of Builth Wells. Llanyre is located in a v-shaped fork formed by the A470 & A483 roads, the A4081 which cuts from west to east across that fork forms the southern edge of Llanyre village. Most of the properties within Llanyre are located on a lane which runs northwards from the A4081 and side roads of of it. Llanyre is an upland community and the parish would largely have earned its living from pastoral farming at the time of this transcript. Llanyre sits in rolling countryside on the western side of the River Ithon which drains the parish southwards to join the River Wye just to the south of Newbridge-on-Wye and thence to the Bristol Channel through Chepstow. Llanyre is sited at 220 metres above sea level and land rises steeply to the west up to over 440 metres on Rhiw Gwraidd. Parishes are of a large size in this part of Wales and Llanyre was no exception, the parish covered 5,900 acres but almost one third was described as "waste"; the parish would have supported a population of around 750 parishioners. In common with most of Wales there is no mention of Llanyre in Domesday Book which did not cover this area.


The Church

St Llyr's church stands close to the junction of Llanyre's main lane with the A4081 (incidentally in the 19th century it bore the dedication of "All Saints"). The church is a late Victorian replacement for a much earlier church and is clearly of little architectural interest as it merits a token few lines in Pevsner. The church stands some 50 metres from the A4081 and is partially hidden behind fronting properties until you almost alongside. A pair of metal gates grants access at the southern end of the site. The church yard is quite noticeably filled with trees and views are only really obtainable from the south and west.
