The ParishThe parish of Cheddon Fitzpaine lies in western Somerset about 3 miles northeast of the county town of Taunton. Cheddon Fitzpaine is a relatively small and compact village which lies about a mile north of the A3259 road which links northern Taunton with the A38. Modern developments in the form of the Taunton & Bridgwater Canal pass through the parish. Cheddon Fitzpaine's economy would have been largely based upon pastoral farming, it sits on the flood plain of the River Tone which would have produced rich pastures but heavy soils. The Maiden Brook drains the parish the short distance southwards to the Tone which then heads east and then north to reach the Bristol Channel through the port of Bridgwater. Cheddon Fitzpaine is sited at around 30 metres above the but land starts to rise to its north, as the first outliers of the Quantock Hills, reaching over 200 metres within a couple of miles. In a county of relatively small parishes Cheddon Fitzpaine was one of the smaller, it covered just under 950 acres and would have supported a population of around 350 parishioners. In Domesday times Cheddon Fitzpaine was tiny indeed, it was held by one Roger Arundel and could offer just 4 ploughs along with small meadows & pastures. |
