The ParishThe parish of Middle Chinnock (as its name suggests the central one of 3 villages with that name) lies in southern Somerset not too far from its border with neighbouring Dorset. Middle Chinnock is located about 3 miles northeast of the market town of Crewkerne and sits, in lanes, a mile west of the A30 road which connects Crewkerne with Yeovil and onward to London. Middle Chinnock is a tiny place little more than a strip of properties along a lane to the east of West Chinnock. This area of the county is characterised by the rather fretted border between the Levels and higher ground to the east and south, a series of ridges cut deep into the low ground and provide a mixture of land uses for each parish, pastures on lower ground and arable on the drier parts. Middle Chinnock sits on a narrow such ridge between the Chinnock Brook, to its north, and the Broad River, to its south; both drain into the infant River Parrett which makes its way across the Levels to reach the outer Bristol Channel through the port of Bridgwater. Middle Chinnock is sited at around 40 metres above the sea, its ridge rises steadily eastwards topping out at around 135 metres near East Chinnock. Middle Chinnock parish was one of the smallest within its county, covering only a little over 450 acres it was one of the smallest rural parishes in the country and would have supported close to 200 parishioners. Middle Chinnock is not specifically mentioned in Domesday Book. |
