The ParishThe parish of Farrington Gurney lies in northeastern Somerset on the northern edges of the Mendip Hills. Farrington Gurney is a large and compact village situated about 8 miles northeast of the city of Wells. Farrington Gurney sits where two major roads briefly join, the A39 heading from Bath to Bridgwater and the A37 from Bristol to Shepton Mallet. Whilst pastoral farming was predominant in landuse the area was underlain by the North Somerset coalfield and many men would have found work in the extraction of the same. Mining activities have now ceased and Farrington Gurney is just a large village sitting amongst good communications and close enough to Bristol & Bath to warrant some commuters. Farrington Gurney is drained eastwards by small tributaries of the Wellow Brook, this joins the Avon to the east of Bath before returning westwards to the Bristol Channel through the Avon Gorge. Farrington Gurney sits on a shelf of land at around 120 metres above the sea, land rises to the south onto the Mendip limestone hills with local heights rising to almost 200 metres. Farrington Gurney parish was small, the area north of the Mendips is characterised by small parishes, it covered almost 1,000 acres and would have supported a population of about 600 parishioners. In Domesday times Farrington Gurney was a rural settlement, held by Bishop Geoffrey of Coutances it could offer just 7 ploughs, a small meadow and sundry domestic animals. |
