The ParishThe parish of Paulton sits in northeastern Somerset on the northern flanks of the Mendip Hills. Paulton is a large and much expanded village located about 9 miles southwest of the city of Bath. Paulton sits on the B3355 road which connects the A39 (Bath to Wells road) with the A362 running up from Frome. Modern Paulton has grown into a rough square shape still centred on the main street and church but spreading for almost a mile in each direction. At the time of this transcript Paulton would have had a mixed economy, tradition pastoral farming would have still been prominent but Paulton sits on the North Somerset coalfield and this would have been the main employment for many in the village. Paulton is drained to the northeast by the Cam Brook which heads off and joins the Avon to the east of Bath eventually reaching the Bristol Channel through the port of Bristol. Paulton is sited at around 110 metres above the sea and sits on a ridge forming the precursor to the nearby Mendip Hills, local heights top out around 160 metres and the countryside is rolling. Paulton parish was rather small for the area, covering just under 1,100 acres it would nevertheless have supported a population of almost 2,000 parishioners. There is no mention of Paulton in Domesday Book. |
