The ParishThe parish of Midsomer Norton lies in northeastern Somerset about 9 miles southwest of the city of Bath. Midsomer Norton is located on the A362 road which connects Frome with the main A39 road from Bath to Bridgwater. Midsomer Norton is a large village almost a small town which grew as a result of the coal mines of the Somerset coal fields which underlay the area. A largely rural area dominated by pastoral farming much changed when mining came to predominate, Midsomer Norton grew substantially from a large village spreading up the slopes of the twin rivers of the Somer & the Wellow Brook onto the start of the Mendip Hills which rise to the south. Nowadays mining has ceased and Midsomer Norton earns its living from commuters to nearby Bristol & Bath as well as from light industry. The Somer & Wellow Brook drain the parish eastwards joining the Avon to the east of Bath before returning westwards to reach the Bristol Channel through the Avon Gorge. Midsomer Norton is sited at around 100 metres above the sea and the land rises to the south onto the Mendip Hills where local heights top out at around twice that height. Midsomer Norton parish was one of the larger in its area, it covered almost 4,000 acres and would have supported a population of around 3,500 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Midsomer Norton in Domesday Book. |

1 | 26th April 1754 - 15th September 1794 | Somerset Heritage Centre - Reference - D\P\msn/2/1/2 | Standard preprinted and self-numbered combined Banns & marriage register with 4 entries per page | Grade 4 Register - there are notable quality issues with this register which may have resulted in many misreads | This register is very much the "curate's egg" with excellently kept pages suddenly replaced by the unkempt. Add in some fading (in a handful of cases almost invisible) and irregularly kept entries (some have been omitted where it was unclear whether a marriage occurred) and you can see that this was a bit of challenge. |
2 | 25th September 1794 - 27th September 1812 | Somerset Heritage Centre - Reference - D\P\msn/2/1/4 | Standard preprinted and self-numbered Marriage register with 3 entries per page | Grade 3 Register - there are sufficient quality issues with this register to indicate that some misreads will occur albeit few in number | Fading of entries within the first 5 years of this register leads to a possibility of a few misreads |
3 | 1st March 1813 - 18th June 1837 | Somerset Heritage Centre - Reference - D\P\msn/2/1/6 | Standard Rose style preprinted and prenumbered Marriage register | Grade 3 Register - there are sufficient quality issues with this register to indicate that some misreads will occur albeit few in number | Fading of random pages leads to a further issue of possible misreads |
