The ParishThe parish of Huntspill lies in western central Somerset, indeed it forms part of Somerset's western coast here the Parrett Estuary. Huntspill is located about 6 miles north of the port town of Bridgwater. Huntspill sits on the A38 road which connects Bridgwater with Bristol. Modern communications crisscross the parish, the Bristol to the southwest rail line & the modern M5 motorway both pass through the parish. Huntspill is a large and compact village with most properties lying along the A38 or a short looping road around by the church and back. At the time of this transcript Huntspill would have earned its living largely from pastoral farming, the land hereabouts is low-lying and often flooded grazing pastures. There is much land reclamation around the village and most of the drainage is man-influenced all heading for the nearby Parrett Estuary and thence the Bristol Channel. Huntspill is sited at just 3 metres above the sea and it is some distance before any significant contours are reached. Huntspill parish was one of the larger in this area, a feature of land reclamation, and covered around 6,600 acres, it would have supported a population of around 1,600 parishioners. In Domesday times Huntspill was held by Walter of Douai and cold offer 15 ploughs plus meadows and pastures. |
