The ParishThe parish of Puriton lies in western central Somerset close to its Bristol Channel coast. Puriton is about 4 miles northeast of the market town of Bridgwater, it is sited by the junction of the A39 road which links Bridgwater to Glastonbury with the M5 motorway on its way from Birmingham to the southwest and Exeter. Puriton is a compact settlement largely built around a crossroads of lanes to the north of the A39. The parish is at the heart of many communications as the main Bristol to the southwest railway line also passes just west of the village. Puriton is located at the western end of a long ridge of higher ground which stretches like a finger through the lower lying Somerset Levels, a number of villages being sited on its edges. This ridge peters out where it meets the River Parrett flowing northwestwards into the Bristol Channel. The area was mixed pastoral land, cattle on the grazing marshes of The Levels and sheep on the limestone rich ridge making for quite a prosperous settlement. Puriton is sited at around 15 metres above sea level, the ridge rises a further 50 metres to the southeast. Puriton parish was of a typical size for this area covering some 1,500 acres and supported around 450 parishioners. In Domesday times the parish was held by Queen Edith and supported 8 ploughs as well as extensive meadows and pastures. |
