The ParishThe parish of Stoke sub Hamdon lies in southern Somerset roughly 6 miles west of the large market town of Yeovil. Stoke sub Hamdon is located between the busy A303 (London to Exeter) road and Ham(don) Hill which it sits below. There are two distinct centres of property, West Stoke, the larger sits immediately south of the A303 whilst the smaller, East Stoke is a little over a half mile further east but holds the parish church. West Stoke consists of a long southward running lane and its crossroads with the former route of the A303 which leads to the small compact sub-village of East Stoke. Whilst the area was primarily a farming district, rich soils mean that here arable was in dominance with early gazetteers giving a 2:1 ratio in its favour, in addition, and particularly in West Stoke, there was a noted local glove making industry employing many of the local populace. Modern developments have come to Stoke sub Hamdon albeit the former railway line between Yeovil and Langport has since been re-purposed as the access road to the A303 from Yeovil, the A3088, the A303, itself, has been upgraded to fast dual carriageway and carries an immense volume of holiday traffic in summer months. Stoke sub Hamdon is drained northwestwards by the Wellham Brook, a feeder for the nearby River Parrett which continues that direction before meeting the outer Bristol Channel through the port of Bridgwater. Stoke sub Hamdon occupies a rising site, 25 metres above the sea at its northernmost point to 55 metres on the slopes of Ham Hill, the latter rises as a notable outcrop of honey-coloured stone to a spot height of 135 metres. Stoke sub Hamdon parish was fairly typically sized for its area, covering just under 1,400 acres it would have supported a population of around 1,350 parishioners. In Domesday times Stoke sub Hamdon was a holding of Count Robert of Mortain and had 12 ploughs, extensive meadows, pastures & woodland and an impressive 3 mills making for a rather wealthy holding, |
