The ParishThe parish of Norton sub Hamdon lies in southern Somerset, not too far from its border with neighbouring Dorset. Norton sub Hamdon lies about 6 miles west of the large market town of Yeovil, it is located just east of the A356 road which Crewkerne with the major trunk road of the A303 (London to Exeter) road. As its name suggests it sits in lanes below the prominent eminence of Hamdon Hill which lies to the northeast of the village. Norton sub Hamdon is a compact village mostly built along the lane that climbs up and over Hamdon Hill on its way from the A356 towards Yeovil. The village sits on a small plain set above the flood level of the nearby River Parrett which flows northwards towards the Somerset Levels and its exit to the sea through Bridgwater. The landscape was at one time dominated by pastoral farming but nowadays there is more of mixture as modern machinery makes the heavy soils more manageable. The parish was rather a small one with less than 650 acres but it still supported over 500 parishioners. In Domesday times the land was held by the French Grestain Abbey based in Normandy, the parish supported just 4 ploughs but possessed meadows, woodlands and 2 mills. |
