The ParishThe parish of Weston under Lizard lies in the extreme west of Staffordshire forming an extensive stretch of the border with neighbouring Shropshire. Weston under Lizard is located roughly 7 miles east of the new town of Telford and sits on the A5 (the Roman's Watling Street) which connects Telford with Cannock. Weston under Lizard is very much an estate village, the Earls of Bradford owned almost all land within the parish, with most properties lying either on the busy A5 or within the grounds of Weston Park. The stately home of Weston Park, nowadays a popular visitor attraction, dominates life and land within the parish, its grounds landscaped by, amongst others, Capability Brown surround the elegant mansion of the late 17th century, reputedly designed by Lady Wilbraham. The economy of the parish was also dominated by the needs of the estate, farming was mixed in nature but pastoral in the main. Modern developments have come to the parish, the modern M54 skirts the south of the parish and relieves much of the heavy traffic that once thundered through the village on the A5. Weston under Lizard is drained eastwards by a network of small streams, interrupted by Belvide Reservoir, eventually merging to become the River Penk, the latter merges with the Sow and shortly after with the Trent to begin a long journey to the North Sea arriving through the Humber Estuary. Weston under Lizard is sited at around 110 metres above the sea in gentle terrain that rises to 156 metres at nearby Bishop's Wood. Weston under Lizard parish was fairly typically sized for its area, covering just under 2,400 acres it would have supported a population of close to 300 parishioners. In Domesday times Weston under Lizard was a tiny place, held by the local sheriff one Reginald it could muster just 5 ploughs and a small wood. |
