The ParishThe parish of Tong lies in the extreme east of Shropshire forming an extensive stretch of the border with neighbouring Staffordshire. Tong is located roughly 10 miles northwest of the Staffordshire industrial town of Wolverhampton and sits on the A41 road which links Wolverhampton with Newport, it sits a half mile north of that road's intersection with the modern M54 motorway. There are two distinct settlements within the parish, the village of Tong, itself, is a small hamlet of properties gathered around the church and hall whilst a half mile north there is the second settlement of Tong Norton gathered around the former castle site.Tong Castle was the family seat of the Durant family and had turrets, pinnacles and 8 lofty domes, it was demolished in 1954 after falling into ruin. Tong is essentially an estate parish with the local economy, dominated by pastoral farming, determined largely by the needs of the estate. In addition there was exploitation of the local sandstone, in both red & white forms, for local building work. The modern M54 dominates the south of the parish, standing defiantly even upon the site of the Duirant's estate. Drainage of the area is rather vague with both water headed southwards to the Severn via the River Worfe whilst eastwards it reaches the Penk, a tributary of the immense Trent catchment headed for the North Sea. Both Tong and Tong Norton stand at around 90 metres above the sea with gentle terrain rising around to local spot heights of 147 & 156 metres standing on the county border with Staffordshire. Tong parish was extensive at almost 3,500 acres and that acreage would have supported a population of close to 550 parishioners. In Domesday times Tong was an altogether much smaller place, held by Earl Roger of Shrewsbury it could muster just 7 ploughs and a league of woodland as its assets. |
