The ParishThe parish of Bramfield lies in northeastern Suffolk about 2 miles south of the small market town of Halesworth. Bramfield is a small and compact village largely built along the A144 road, which connects Halesworth with the nearby A12 (Lowestoft to Ipswich) road. Much of the village is built along the A144 or the lanes either side forming a double-crossroads either side of the crossing of a tributary of the River Blyth. At the time of this transcript most of the populous would have earned their living from agriculture with arable farming predominating and little has changed with the area holding large cereal fields as well as beet & oil seed. The tributary of the Blyth heads eastwards the short distance to the latter and reaches the North Sea through the nearby Blyth Estuary between Southwold & Walberswick. Bramfield is sited at around 10 metres above the sea in a landscape that, at best, is gently rolling. Bramfield parish was fairly typically sized for Suffolk, it covered around 2,500 acres and would have supported a population of about 750 parishioners. In Domesday times Bramfield was held by Count Alan of Brittany and could offer 14 ploughs, small meadows and a large area of woodland dominated by pigs. |
