The ParishThe parish of Walpole lies in eastern Suffolk about 2 miles southwest of the market town of Halesworth and straddling the winding B1117 that connects Halesworth with Laxfield & Stradbroke. The compact village is situated at a crossing of a tributary of the River Blythe at a low height of 13 metres above sea level despite being 7 miles inland from the North Sea. This area is notable for its arable farming and other than in the river bottoms the land is largely used for growing cereal and oil seed. Walpole has always been a substantial village with a population around 600 parishioners. Walpole has been around for a long time and receives a mention in Domesday book having 10 ploughs and being in the lands of "Count Alan". |
