The ParishThe parish of Edwardstone lies in southwestern Suffolk not too far from its border with neighbouring Essex. Edwardstone is located a little over 5 miles east of the market town of Sudbury and sits just under 2 miles north of the A1071 road which links Sudbury with Hadleigh. Edwardstone is a dispersed village with no real centre to it, most properties lie on a broad oval of lanes for which the southwestern corner is formed by church & hall. The estate of Edwardstone Hall would have dominated life in this parish, the seat of the Brands & Dawson families it was demolished in 1962 but prior to that its affairs would have largely dictated the parish economy. Like most Suffolk parishes Edwardstone would have been largely arable, its position close to the valley of the infant River Box would have also granted it some grazing meadows to add a little diversity. Edwardstone is drained southeastwards by the Box which merges with the Stour at the Essex border near Stratford St Mary, the Stour meets the North Sea through its estuary and the twin ports of Harwich & Felixstowe. Edwardstone is sited at around 60 metres above the sea in gentle terrain where the local high points just reach above 80 metres at nearby Milden. Edwardstone pariah was fairly typically sized for its area, covering close to 1,800 acres it would have supported a population of close to 500 parishioners. In Domesday times Edwardstone was a holding on one Rober Malet its assets of 5 ploughs, the usual meadows & woodland were supplemented by a mill. |

Plain, unruled book, a continuation of the extant
composite register in contravention of Hardwicke's segregation
& wording requirements |
Grade 3 Register - there are sufficient quality issues
with this register to indicate that some misreads will occur
albeit few in number |
A combination of both fading and a lack of use of "white
space" to segregate entries makes for a slow read and the
possibility of both accidental omission and misread |
2 | 4th August 1772 - 8th December 1812 | Suffolk Record Office - Bury St Edmunds - Reference - FL563/4/1/4 | Standard preprinted and self-numbered Marriage register with 3 entries per page | Grade 2 Register - not a perfect read but with a low likelihood of misreads | None NB this register is bound together with contemporary composite register into a single archival deposit |
3 | 18th May 1813 - 19th May 1837 | Suffolk Record Office - Bury St Edmunds - Reference - FL563/4/3/1 | Standard Rose style preprinted and prenumbered Marriage register | Grade 5 Register - the condition of this register is such that the transcript carries a "health warning" as to the likelihood of being substantially incorrect | Unfortunately this register has suffered very badly from fading making for a number of records which have faded almost to invisibility. In fact the first 30 records for this register can only best be described as "pure guesswork" as a result. Whilst matters improve they only move from appalling to rather poor and as a consequence this piece carries a severe health warning. This register may ne substantially misread as a result of its poor quality. |
