The ParishThe parish of Milden lies in southern Suffolk close to the border with Essex. Milden is about 3 miles southeast of the wool town (and tourist centre) of Lavenham. There is not a village as such for Milden but a straggle of farms and cottages along a lane that runs parallel to the B1115 which connects Monks Eleigh with Sudbury. Milden is sited on a broad agricultural plateau at about 80 metres above sea level, it is surrounded with arable fields. The parish is dominated by the 18th century hall of Milden Hall and was a closed parish dominated by the single landowner which restricted population. There were few parishioners, fewer than 200 at the time of this transcript. Despite its small size Milden has been around for a while, it merits a tiny mention in Domesday Book where it was held by "a free man", there is also the remains of a 12th century Motte within the parish. |
