The ParishThe parish of Henstead lies in northeaster Suffolk not too far from its North Sea coastline. Henstead is located about 6 miles southeast of the market town of Beccles and is small village sitting on the southern side of the valley of the Hundred River just under a mile west of the A12 (Lowestoft to Ipswich) road. Henstead formerly sat a little further west close to the church but a fire in 1641 destroyed most of the village houses and the rebuild took place further east. Like most Suffolk parishes Henstead was, and still is, an arable farming community albeit some pastures can be found close to the river. The Hundred river drains the short distance eastwards to meet the North Sea just to the south of Kessingland. Henstead is sited at around 10 metres above the sea and sits within the coastal plain where height rarely ranges above 20 metres for some distance. Henstead was a fairly typically sized parish for this area, covering just under 1,500 acres it would have supported a population of close to 550 parishioners. In Domesday times it was an even more modest place, held by William de Warennes it could offer just 4 ploughs and a small stock of livestock. |
