The ParishThe parish of Ellough lies in northeastern Suffolk about 3 miles southeast of the market town of Beccles. What passes for a village, merely a cluster of farms and cottages, lies just east of the A145 road which links Beccles to Southwold. The area is quite low lying, between 10 and 20 metres above sea level, and much of the parish lies in the headwaters of the Hundred river. As a consequence much of the parish is pasture rather than the normal arable of the area due to waterlogging in the valley. The parish covers around 1,100 acres but supported merely 150 or so parishioners. Despite Ellough's small size it has a long history being mentioned in Domesday Book where it supported 1/2 a plough. |
