The ParishThe parish of Worlingham is in extreme northeastern Suffolk, indeed it forms part of the border with neighbouring Norfolk. Worlingham is sited in the valley of the River Waveney just east of the market town of Beccles, it is nowadays almost absorbed by that market town and forms its eastern portion. Worlingham formerly sat on the A146 road which links Beccles to Lowestoft but this has now been rerouted to the north to bypass the village. The parish is sited about 20 metres above sea-level with most of the settlement on raised ground above the floodplain of the Waveney. The parish is a mixture of arable, on the higher ground, and pasture, on the floodplain, farming. The parish is dominated by Worlingham Hall and it is perhaps indicative that the hall controlled population and settlement as a closed parish. Despite being a relatively large parish for Suffolk at just a little over 1,700 acres it only supported around 200 parishioners. Worlingham has been around for a long time, it gets no fewer than 4 mentions in Domesday Book (although there is undoubted repetition) where it supported 2 ploughs and was worth, as well as a cash sum, 1,000 herrings. |

1 | 18th August 1754 - 5th October 1778 | Suffolk Record Office - Lowestoft - Reference - 167/D/1/3 |
Plain, unruled book, a continuation of the extant composite register in contravention of Hardwicke's segregation & wording requirements | Grade 3 Register - there are sufficient quality issues with this register to indicate that some misreads will occur albeit few in number | Entries in this register are intermingled with baptisms and burials and there is little or no use of "white-space" to segregate entries leading a to a possibility of omission |
2 | 14th January 1782 - August 1809 | Suffolk Record Office - Lowestoft - Reference - 167/D/1/4b | Standard preprinted and self-numbered Marriage register with 4 entries per page | Grade 5 Register - the condition of this register is such that the transcript carries a "health warning" as to the likelihood of being substantially incorrect | This register has suffered considerable physical damage and also suffers from extremely poor handwriting, entries have been omitted as they are physically not completely present sufficiently enough to make a transcript. Errors may also abound as a result of misreads - this piece should be treated with some caution |
3 | 1809 - 1812 | It is unclear whether any marriages occurred during this gap in register coverage | |||
4 | 21st January 1813 - 4th November 1836 | Suffolk Record Office - Lowestoft - Reference - 167/D/1/5 | Standard Rose style preprinted and prenumbered Marriage register | Grade 2 Register - not a perfect read but with a low likelihood of misreads | None |
