The ParishThe parish of Higham lies in the extreme south of Suffolk forming a short stretch of the border, here marked by the River Stour, with neighbouring Essex. Higham is located about 8 miles north of the Essex town & port of Colchester and sits on the B1068 road which connects the main arterial route of the A12 with the Stour valley villages of Nayland & Stoke-by-Nayland. This is the territory of the artist Constable who's famous work "THe Haywain" was made in the Stour valley seawards of the busy A12. Higham, sitting within this valley and that of the tributary the Brett, would have had a more mixed farming regime than is usual in a country known for its broad arable fields, the Stour's grazing marshes providing diversity. The Brett & Stour conjoin immediately west of Higham and flow the short distance to the North Sea eastwards to meet it through the port of Manningtree. Higham's properties rise along the route of the B1068 from the river's crossing at 7 metres to the higher cottages at 25 metres above the sea, in this gentle terrain local heights rarely rise much above 50 metres. A small parish in a county of small parishes, Higham would have covered just under 900 acres and within that acreage would have supported a population of close to 250 parishioners. In Domesday times Higham was equally small but shared with no fewer than 5 landholders, collectively their holdings amounted to just 5 ploughs, the usual meadows & woodland but there was a mill controlled by Gundwin the chamberlain. |
