The ParishThe parish of Holton St Mary (there being 2 villages called Holton in Suffolk) lies in the far south of the county close by the border with Essex. The parish is about 4 miles northwest of the small Essex port of Manningtree and adjacent to the busy A12 road. The village is astride the B1070 road which leads from the A12 to the market town of Hadleigh. Holton St Mary is a relatively small parish, about 800 acres, and with a small population of less than 200 parishioners. The area is a rich agricultural one at about 50 metres above sea level and above the pretty valley of the River Stour made famous by the paintings of Constable. Despite its small size Holton St Mary has a long history being mentioned in Domesday Book as held by a Saxon Eisger and possessing 7 ploughs. |
