The ParishThe parish of Stonham Aspal sits in central Suffolk about 5 miles east of the market town of Stowmarket. Stonham Aspal is a long and linear village built along the A1120 road which connects Stowmarket through to the a12 at Yoxford and roughly a mile east of the A140 which connects Ipswich with Norwich. The area around Stonham Aspal is almost exclusively used for arable agriculture, a more mixed farming regime would have applied at the time of this transcript. Stonham Aspal sits on a broad plain dominated today by vast fields of cereal, beet and oil seed. A small tributary of the River Gipping drains the parish westwards to join that river and reach the North Sea through Ipswich. Stonham Aspal is sited at around 60 metres above sea level and it is several miles before one encounters a contour other than those marking the route of the Gipping's tributary. Stonham Aspal parish was of a fairly typical size for a Suffolk parish, it covered almost 2,400 acres and would have supported a population of almost 800 parishioners. In Domesday times Stonham Aspal was held by one Roger de Rames, it has a very detailed entry in the book which shows a marked decline in fortunes following the conquest, it could offer 8 ploughs as well as meadow, pastures and woodlands, a small portion, known as "The Soke" was shared directly with the King. |
