The ParishThe parish of Little Stonham, which is sometimes rendered as Stonham Parva, is located in central Suffolk. Little Stonham lies about 4 miles east of the market town of Stowmarket. Little Stonham is a small village of two halves, part gathered along a lane leading to its church, the other a frontage to the main A140 road which connects Norwich with Ipswich, the notable signage of the Magpie Inn a feature of this road with its gallows-like structure across the road topped by a magpie motif. The area around Little Stonham is almost entirely arable and little has changed since the time of this transcript. Little Stonham is drained by a small tributary of the River Gipping which it joins close to Stowmarket before heading for the North Sea through the port of Ipswich. Little Stonham is sited at around 50 metres above the sea and whilst the stream bed is some 10 metres lower that represents the most significant change of height for many a mile, the land best described at fairly level. Little Stonham parish was typically small as are most Suffolk parishes, it covered just under 1,200 acres and would have supported a population in the region of 350 parishioners. In Domesday times Little Stonham, together with earl Stonham, was held by one Roger of Poitou, it could offer 14 ploughs, small woodlands and meadows together with a mill, a prosperous small place indeed. |
