The ParishThe parish of Weybread lies in central Northern Suffolk, indeed it forms part of the border with neighbouring Norfolk. Weybread is located about 2 miles south of the Norfolk market town of Harleston. Weybread is a small and compact village sitting on the B1116 road which links Harleston with Framlingham, most of Weybread is either sited along that road or the narrow lane (Church Road) which leads to both church and hall running westwards. The area around Weybread would have largely been used for farming, there would have been extensive cereal fields on the higher ground, whilst that part of the parish bordering the River Waveney would have supported mainly cattle grazing. Weybread is drained by small tributaries of the Waveney which heads eastwards, forming the border of the two counties to reach the North Sea through the port of Great Yarmouth. Weybread is sited at 40 metres above the sea although lower parts of the parish are some 20 metres lower, once above the river valleys the landscape is largely a broad flat plateau. Weybread parish was of a fairly typical size for a Suffolk parish, it covered around 2,500 acres and would have supported a population of almost 800 parishioners. In Domesday times Weybread was shared four-ways, a portion was held by the King, another by the Abbey at Bury St Edmunds and the rest shared between one Roger of Poitou & one Robert Malet. The parish was relatively wealthy and could offer 11 ploughs as well as meadows & woodland and probably 5 mills. |
