The ParishThe parish of Chiddingfold lies in southwestern Surrey, indeed it forms part of the border with neighbouring Sussex. Chiddingfold is located about 6 miles south of the market town of Godalming on the A283 road that links Godalming with Petworth in Sussex. Chiddingfold is a substantial village, it was at one time sufficiently important to carry a weekly market but this has ceased, with two principal centres of population. The centre is grouped around the village green and church alongside the A283 whereas a second area stretches westwards from the A283 about a quarter of a mile further north. Chiddingfold is sited in Surrey's portion of The Weald, a rolling area lying between the North and South Downs, formed on older Jurassic rocks. The area about Chiddingfold is characteristically wooded with small mixed farming fields interspersed between. The village sits at the crossing of a small stream that flows eastwards to join and help form the River Arun which is headed southwards to reach the English Channel. Chiddingfold is sited at around 50 metres above the sea in gently undulating countryside. The parish was relatively large for a southern parish, at almost 5,800 acres it would have supported around 1,100 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Chiddingfold in Domesday Book. |
