The ParishThe parish of West Horsley lies in the western portion of central Surrey roughly 6 miles northeast of the town of Guildford. West Horsley sits on and mostly north of the A246 road which links Guildford with Leatherhead. West Horsley is a much expanded and rather linear village, early maps show it centred upon the shallow fork in lanes north of the A246, today it has expanded southwards to the A246 and also northeastwards as far as the railway line between Guildford & London. West Horsley sits upon younger beds of rock than the chalk of the North Downs which rise to the south, an area of relatively poor soils traditionally heathland with much forest, a glance at modern maps shows still extensive forestry in the area, at the time of this transcript it would have been coppiced to supply both forest products and also charcoal, there were also deer parks which were visited by the notorious Henry VIII for hunting. The farmed areas were a mixture of both pastoral and arable methods. The heath also managed for both pannage and also with warrenries for rabbits. Modern developments arrived with the railway line which grants East & West Horsley a joint station, albeit closer to the former than to West Horsley. West Horsley is drained northwards by small streams which soon reach the River Wey, the latter continues northwards to reach the Thames wherein water heads east through the capital to the North Sea. West Horsley is sited at between 70 & 90 metres above the sea on gently rising ground, to the south the chalk escarpment of the North Downs rises to 223 metres on Hackhurst Downs. Given the poor quality of the land it is not surprising that West Horsley parish was quite extensive covering almost exactly 3,000 acres it would have supported a population of close to 650 parishioners. Domesday West Horsley was equally a substantial rural manor held by one Walter offering 8 ploughs and extensive woodland. |
