The ParishThe parish of Durrington sits in eastern Wiltshire close to the border with neighbouring Hampshire. The village lies in the valley of the River Avon about 2 miles north of the market town of Amesbury where the A345 road which links Amesbury with Pewsey crosses the A3028. Durrington has been extended greatly in recent times as it borders the military ranges of Larkhill and many military personnel use the village as base. The original village grew up on a lane running east from the A345 along a broad meander of the River Avon. The village centre lies at about 80 metres above sea level but land rises to the west to twice that height on the broad flanks of Salisbury Plain. The parish was largely pastoral in the past with cattle in the valley bottom and sheep on the chalk grasslands of the plain. The parish was of average size covering a little over 2,500 acres and supported just short of 500 parishioners. In Domesday times Durrington was obviously a small settlement in the difficult soils it only supported 2 ploughs. |
