The ParishThe parish of Coxwold lies in northern central Yorkshire, in the south of the North Riding. Coxwold is located about 7 miles southeast of the market town of Thirsk and sits close to the southern boundary of the North Yorkshire Moors. Coxwold parish covered an extensive area and barely a third of its inhabitants lived in the village of Coxwold, that village is a small compact village built around a crossroads of lanes some 3 miles north east of the A19 road which connects York with Thirsk. Coxwold would have made its money from farming at the time of this transcript, a mixed farming regime would have predominated as the parish held both arable land and extensive grazing. Several small becks drain the parish most headed westwards to reach the Swale and thence to the North Sea through the Humber Estuary. Coxwold is sited at around 80 metres above the sea but sits on lower land between the North Yorkshire Moors which rise to local heights of almost 300 metres to the north and Yearsley Moor which reaches 150 metres to the southeast. This area of Yorkshire is characterised by a mixture of both large and small parishes, Coxwold was one of the larger, it covered just over 12,000 acres and would have supported a population of around 1,100 parishioners. In Domesday times Coxwold was held by one Hugh son of Baldric and could offer an impressive 33 ploughs as well as extensive woodlands. |
