The ParishThe parish of Kilburn lies in north central Yorkshire, on the southwestern fringe of the North Yorkshire Moors and towards the south of the North Riding. Kilburn is located about 7 miles east of the market town of Thirsk and sits, in lanes, just over 2 miles south of the A170 road which connects Thirsk with Helmsley. Kilburn consists of two principal settlements, Kilburn, itself, and High Kilburn further up-slope towards the top of the North Yorkshire Moors. Kilburn would have been, and indeed still largely is a farming community, the parish shares a portion of the Vale of York, where arable would have predominated, together with a portion of moorland, suitable only for grazing of sheep. Today Kilburn probably makes as much money from its scenery, the iconic "White Horse" stands above the twin villages, attracting tourists and hikers to the region. Various small streams head westwards to join the Swale and thence turn south, through York to reach the North Sea through the Humber Estuary. Kilburn is sited at around 100 metres above the sea with the higher reaches of High Kilburn some 40 metres higher, land rises onto the North Yorkshire Moors to local heights of almost 300 metres on nearby Oldstead Moor. Northern parishes are large in extent and Kilburn was certainly that, it covered close to 5,900 acres and would have supported a population of just over 800 parishioners. In Domesday times this area had scant coverage but Kilburn was recorded as a holding of one Hugh son of Baldric, its assets were meagre and it was clearly a small place at that time. |
