The ParishThe parish of Kettlewell is located in the northern part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, indeed it forms part of the border with the North Riding. Kettlewell is a substantial settlement with an annual livestock fair making it a market town. Kettlewell is located in the Yorkshire Dales, in Wharfedale, astride the B6160 road which runs up that Dale from Addingham to Aysgarth. This is grand Yorkshire hiking country, the valley of the River Wharfe cutting deeply through some fine upland moorland, Kettlewell is a major centre for hiking in the Dales, the Dales Way trail cuts through the parish for many miles. The landscape is open moorland on the tops with rich pasture in the valley. Kettlewell is a compact settlement which has grown up on the confluence of the Wharfe with a number of becks running in from the east, notable Park Gill Beck, which have created space for a settlement in the otherwise compact valley. Kettlewell is an upland settlement sited at around 200 metres above sea level, however the land rises around to over 600 metres above the sea, culminating in the summit of Great Whernside at 704 metres. As befits an upland community the parish is large covering in excess of 7,000 acres and supporting just under 700 parishioners. Kettlewell receives a cursory mention in Domesday Book where it is assessed for tax and described as held by Roger of Poitou. |
