The ParishThe parish of Seaton Ross lies in southeastern Yorkshire, within the East Riding and is located roughly 5 miles south of the market town of Pocklington. Seaton Ross sits about 2 miles north of the A163 road which links Selby with Holme upon Spalding Moor. Seaton Ross is a linear village with properties lying along a meandering north to south running lane for well over a mile from the village's twin mills to the north through to the playing fields in the south. Seaton Ross sits in a flat landscape and i surrounded today with vast cereal fields, at the time of this transcript Seaton Ross would have had a much more varied farming landscape with almost equal parts arable and pastoral as estimated by early gazetteers. Seaton Ross is drained southwards by the River Foulness which eventually turns eastwards and is met by extensive man-made drainage infrastructure which carries the water to the Humber Estuary, arriving southwest of Broomfleet, and then the North Sea. All of the village sits below the 10 metre contour with parts as low as merely 4 metres above the sea, within a 2 mile radius only nearby Everingham breaches the 10 metre contour in very flat and low-lying terrain. Seaton Ross parish was quite large in extent covering around 3.300 acres which would have supported a population of close to 550 parishioners. In Domesday times Seaton Ross was one of those northern places recovering from the "harrowing of the north", held by King William it offered just a pair of ploughs, a small meadow and a mill. |
