The ParishThe parish of Aughton lies in the western portion of the East Riding of Yorkshire. Aughton lies about 8 miles northwest of the market town of Howden in the valley of the River Derwent. Aughton is a relatively small compact village built along a westwards leading lane heading off from the B1228 (Howden to York) road. The area surrounding Aughton is largely pastoral in agricultural use, the seasonal flooding of the Derwent would have prevented growth of cereals. The village stands at a mere 10 metres above sea level and only 5 metres above the level of the Derwent. Much of the flood plain is now preserved as part of the Lower Derwent Valley National Nature Reserve and in winter is home to thousands of wintering wildfowl. The Derwent, heading southwards towards the Ouse and the Humber Estuary sweeps up all of the local drainage. Aughton parish was a fairly small one for this area yet still supported over 600 parishioners. In Domesday times the land was held by one Nigel Fossard and boasted 6 ploughs and some woodland. |
