1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Wells Next The Sea St Nicholas |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Wells-next-the-Sea is obviously on the coast,
it is the parish for the largest port of the North Norfolk coast during
the period of this transcription. Nowadays Wells is a small port, packed
with pleasure craft but with a few working crab boats and inshore fishing
smacks. Wells is now a major seaside resort its fate as a port had been
much reduced by extensive silting of the channel which at low tide today
means only shallow-draft vessels can access the quay. The village of Wells
is built on the former coastal line much receded from the present day
shore - over a mile to the sea and the sandy beaches. Wells is still the
largest settlement between the twin towns of Cromer & Sheringham and
the port of King's Lynn on the North coast of the county. |

This is a large transcription of over 6000
entries and is taken from 5 register books. Each book is a standard 1600
entry book except the fifth which is much larger and continues beyond the
period of the transcript well into the 20th Century. All five books are
filmed on Microfilms MF894 & MF895 in the collection of the Norfolk
Record Office and from which this transcript was prepared. The films are quite elderly and there are sections where the images are faded and difficult to read. In addition over such a substantial transcript a large number of differing clerks were involved, whilst the majority were of excellent clarity there were unfortunately a few more tricky hands to decipher. Having raised these caveats, however it was on the whole a straightforward transcript to prepare and some periods were positively a pleasure to read in the clear and bold hands. With such a large transcript there may well be a few errors which creep in hopefully they are few in number and quickly spotted. |
