The parish of Wells-next-the-Sea is obviously on the coast, it is the parish for the largest port of the North Norfolk coast during the period of this transcription. Nowadays Wells is a small port, packed with pleasure craft but with a few working crab boats and inshore fishing smacks. Wells is now a major seaside resort its fate as a port had been much reduced by extensive silting of the channel which at low tide today means only shallow-draft vessels can access the quay. The village of Wells is built on the former coastal line much receded from the present day shore - over a mile to the sea and the sandy beaches. Wells is still the largest settlement between the twin towns of Cromer & Sheringham and the port of King's Lynn on the North coast of the county.

St Nicholas Church is large as befits such a populous parish. The church sits adjacent to the busy A149 road with forms the coast road for much of North Norfolk. Whilst Perpendicular in its origins St Nicholas is largely a result of rebuilding following a severe fire in 1879 - it took almost 10 years to bring the church back to its present state. What remains of the original structure is indicative of a late 14th early 15th century origins for the church which is in keeping with the period of extensive church building in Norfolk.
