The ParishThe parish of Taplow lies in the extreme south of Buckinghamshire, forming a substantial portion of the border with neighbouring Berkshire; that border is here formed by the course of the River Thames. Taplow is situated just a mile east of the Berkshire town of Maidenhead and it is located just over a half mile north of the course of the A4 road which heads from Reading into the capital, the Great West Road of earlier times. A favoured area of the nobility Taplow parish is also home to Cliveden, the residence of George II with its fine views across the Thames into Berkshire. Modern developments abound along this ancient routeway, the main London rail line, Brunel's Great Western, passes along the course of the A4 whilst the modern M4 performing a similar function lies a couple of miles further south. At the time of this transcript this would have been a rural farming area, pastures by the Thames and arable on the chalky soils of higher ground. The Thames drains the parish eastwards through the capital to the North Sea. Taplow is sited at around 60 metres above the sea and sits on something of a shelf some 35 metres above the course of the Thames, land is at or around this height for some distance. Taplow parish is something of a curiosity, a narrow strip of lane following the Thames for well over 2 miles yet less than 400 yards thick, it covered just under 1,800 acres and would have supported a population of close to 700 parishioners. In Domesday times Taplow was one of the many holdings of Bishop Odo of Bayeux and a wealthy place offering 17 ploughs, a woodland stuffed with pigs and a fishery. |
