The ParishThe parish of Llancarfan lies in central southern Glamorgan not too far from its coast with the Bristol Channel. Llancarfan is located about 6 miles southeast of the market town of Cowbridge and roughly the same northwest of the port of Barry. Llancarfan is a relatively small but compact village lying in lanes about 2 miles north of the B4265 road which links Barry with Bridgend. Llancarfan is reputed to have a long history of settlement with claims of a Minster dating from the 6th century. Nowadays Llancarfan is a calm and peaceful rural settlement dominated by pastoral farming in the rich soils of the Vale of Glamorgan. Just 3 miles north of the coast the parish is drained by a small tributary of the River Waycock, this stream runs through the heart of the village, which heads southwestwards to reach the Bristol Channel by the modern intrusion of Aberthaw power station. The urban fringe is close by to Llancarfan as Cardiff's airport sits just 2 miles to its south. Llancarfan is sited at just 20 metres above sea level, although incised by 50 metres into its little valley. By the standards of the Vale of Glamorgan Llancarfan parish was rather large in area, it covered almost 4,000 acres and would have supported a population of around 700 parishioners. In common with most of Wales there is no mention of Llancarfan in Domesday Book as that tome did not cover the area. |
