The ParishThe parish of Welsh St Donats lies in southern Glamorgan about 2 miles east of the market town of Cowbridge. Welsh St Donats is a small and compact village which sits, in lanes, about 2 miles north of the A48 road which connects Cardiff with Bridgend. Most of Welsh St Donats is built around an oval of narrow lanes. The village sits within the fertile Vale of Glamorgan and would have been underpinned by a mixed farming regime, almost equal parts grazing, mainly cattle, with arable farming. Welsh St Donats is drained eastwards by small tributaries of the Ely River which heads through western Cardiff to reach the Bristol Channel through Cardiff Bay. Welsh St Donats is sited at around 110 metres above the sea and sits on something of a local height, albeit only reaching a further 10 metres or so higher. Parishes in this portion of the county are rather small in extent and Welsh St Donats parish was no exception, comprising a little less than 2,200 acres it would have supported a population of just under 300 parishioners. Like most of Wales Welsh St Donats was not mentioned in Domesday Book which did not cover this area. |
