The ParishThe parish of Ivychurch lies in the extreme south of Kent, indeed it forms part of the border with neighbouring Sussex and is also close to Kent's southern English Channel coast. Ivychurch sits in Romney Marsh just inland of the stony headland of Dungeness and is about 3 miles northwest of the large village of New Romney. Ivychurch sits on a junction of lanes about a mile to the east of the A259 road which connects New Romney with the Sussex town of Rye. Ivychurch is surrounded with low-lying pastures and pastoral farming would have predominated at the time of this transcript too. The area has largely been reclaimed by man and as such is drained by a network of ditches and sluices all heading into the prosaically named New Sewer which reaches the English Channel at St Mary's Bay. Ivychurch stands at just 3 metres above the sea and there is not a contour in sight until one has crossed the Royal Military Canal (3 miles to the north). Ivychurch parish has a convoluted edging with small detached parcels of reclaimed land too, the parish is elongated from northeast to southwest like many in the area, it would have covered around 4,500 acres making it large for Kent yet supported barely 180 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Ivychurch in Domesday Book. |
