The ParishThe parish of Holt lies in northern Norfolk not too far from its North Sea coast. Holt is a small market town located about 23 miles north of the city of Norwich. Holt sits on the busy A148 road which connects the port of King's Lynn with the seaside town of Cromer, thankfully for the town of Holt this road now bypasses the town to its south. Holt formerly sat on the rail line from Sheringham to Melton Constable but this was a "Beching Casualty" and has been resurrected as the North Norfolk Steam Railway, an important tourist attraction for the area. Holt's economy would have been dominated by its market for local produce and augmented by a largely arable agricultural base within the wider parish; today arable farming predominates around the town, Holt retains its focus as a shopping centre and is also a popular tourist halt within the wider North Norfolk scene. Holt is drained towards the northwest by a small tributary of the Glaven which heads to the nearby North Sea through the port of Cley Next The Sea. Holt is sited at around 60 metres above the sea and land is fairly level for some distance around, local heights rise gradually to nearby Bodham Hill which reaches just over 90 metres. Holt parish was one of the larger in its area, as befits a market town, it covered just over 2,800 acres and would have supported a population of around 1,600 parishioners. In Domesday times Holt was held directly by King William, it could offer an impressive 26 plough, small meadows and woodland as well as an equally impressive 5 mills. |
