The ParishThe parish of Pulham Market lies in southern Norfolk about 6 miles northeast of the market town of Diss. Pulham Market is a substantial village which lies with its near neighbour (Pulham St Mary) just east of the busy A140 road which runs from Norwich to Ipswich. Pulham Market can be found astride a broad lane which links that road to Harleston in the Waveney valley. Pulham Market, as its name suggests, possessed a weekly market granted in the 12th century but never developed into the town that others became and the market ceased in the 17th century, nevertheless it remains a substantial settlement with all of the usual facilities that such size brings. Pulham Market lies in an intensely agricultural landscape, dominated by large fields of grain, beet and oil seed. The village is situated at around 40 metres above sea level on a broad plain, what drainage there is is heading southeastwards to join the River Waveney (here marking the border with Suffolk) to the east of Wortwell. Pulham Market parish was large for this part of Norfolk, it covered almost 3,000 acres and it supported a healthy population of almost 1,200 parishioners. In Domesday times Pulham Market was enumerated with its neighbour and the land was held by the Abbey of Ely, collectively it supported 19 ploughs as well as woodland, meadow and a mill. |
