The ParishThe parish of Tilshead is located almost at the centre of Wiltshire. Tilshead is a substantial village sited on the A360 road which crosses \Salisbury Plain from Amesbury to Devizes, Tilshead being about 10 miles southeast of the latter. Most of Tilshead village is set off to the north and east of the main road which bends through the southern outskirts of the village. It would be difficult to pass any modern day description of Tilshead without referring to the presence of the British Army which uses large areas of the surrounding downland for artillery & tank practice, Tilshead is not immune from that presence as the Westdown Army Camp sits just a half mile east. In the past this was an agricultural community eking a living from the rather poor chalky soils in a mixed farming area. Tilshead sits in rolling downland at around 100 metres above sea level in a shallow dry valley, this valley heads southeastwards and at Orcheston a stream arises which eventually becomes the River Till, eventually this heads for the English Channel as part of the Wessex Avon. Parishes in Wiltshire tend towards the large size in chalk country and Tilshead, at almost 3,800 acres, is typical of that type, the parish would have supported around 450 parishioners. In Domesday times most of the land was held directly by King William, it boasted an impressive 27 ploughs and 9 mills making it a rather prosperous place. |
