The ParishThe parish of Rous Lench lies in eastern Worcestershire just a short distance from the border with neighbouring Warwickshire. Rous Lench is located about 7 miles north of the market town of Evesham. Rous Lench is a small village which sits, in lanes, about 2 miles south of the A422 road which connects Worcester with the small Warwickshire market town of Alcester. The village name comes from the Rous family who held the parish from 1382 until 1721. Much of Rous Lench's economy was underpinned by pastoral farming with the area characterised by small pastures in a classic landscape often depicted as "hunting country". Today Rouse Lench remains something of a backwater being a relatively isolated rural community off the "beaten-track". Rous Lench is drained by the Whitsun Brook which heads off southwest to shortly join the Avon and thence the Severn eventually reaching the sea through the Bristol Channel. Rous Lench is sited at around 70 metres above the sea in what is relatively gently undulating countryside, local heights rise only a further 10 metres at Goom's Hill. Rous Lench parish was fairly typically sized for its area, it covered just over 1,400 acres and would have supported a population of around 300 parishioners. In Domesday times Rous Lench was fairly affluent, held by the Bishops of Worcester it could offer 9 ploughs, meadows and a mill. |
