The ParishThe parish of Harthill has the distinction of being the most southerly in county of Yorkshire, forming an extensive portion of the border with neighbouring Derbyshire and also being not too far away from Nottinghamshire. Harthill is a large village located about 8 miles west of the Nottinghamshire town of Worksop and which sits, in lanes, about a mile east of the A618 road which connects Rotherham with Clowne. Whilst industrial development from mining brought much change to Harthill's north, this area remained rural and the economy would have been based upon a mixed farming regime. Modern developments have impacted the parish, however, the Rotherham to Retford branch rail line passing just to the north, following the same line as the Chesterfield Canal, whilst the modern M1 runs through the west of the parish. Harthill is drained eastwards by small brooks joining to form the infant River Ryton, this joins the Idle and in turn the Trent to reach the North Sea through the Humber Estuary. Harthill is sited at around 110 metres above the sea in pleasantly rolling countryside, local heights rise barely 40 metres more to Harthill's south. Yorkshire parishes vary significantly in size between upland and lowland parts of the county, by lowland standards Harthill was a large parish covering around 3,400 acres it would have supported a population of about 700 parishioners. In Domesday times Harthill was a relatively small place, held by William of Warenne it offered 12 ploughs and a small meadow. |
