The ParishThe parish of Langton is located in the extreme north of the East Riding of Yorkshire, thus almost central within the eastern part of the overall county. Langton is located about 3 miles south of the market town of Malton on the northern edge of the Yorkshire Wolds. Langton sits in lanes in an area almost lacking in significant roads, a very rural spot; the closest numbered road being the B1248 road which connects Malton with Beverley and runs about 2 miles east of Langton. Langton is a small linear village built along an east to west running lane and sits on the northern banks of Menethorpe Beck. Langton would have made its living largely from farming with a mixed agricultural regime. Menethorpe Beck drains the parish westwards to join the River Derwent which heads southwards before reaching the North Sea through the Humber estuary. Langton is sited at about 40 metres above sea level in its valley, local heights rise to over 200 metres to its south as the Wolds rise from the Derwent plains. Langton parish was fairly typically sized for this area of Yorkshire, it covered almost 3,100 acres and supported a population of just over 300 parishioners. In Domesday times Langton was held by one Hugh son of Baldric and was a much more significant place, it boasted an impressive 21 ploughs as well as meadows and a mill. |
